Ring Size Chart: How To Measure Ring Size

Ancient Egyptians believed that the circle represented eternity, according to anthropologists. Married couples had rings of braided reeds worn on the left-hand ring finger, as it was assumed that this finger had a vein that was connected to the heart. Thousands of years later, in the 1940s, an ad campaign with the tagline “A diamond is forever” was launched, and the diamond engagement ring became the ultimate symbol of undying love, romance, and commitment. Today, engagements are incomplete without a diamond ring shining brightly on the bride-to-be’s hand.

Because of the high value placed on engagement rings, finding the right engagement ring becomes a lot like an epic hero’s quest. And it all starts with finding the correct ring size. You’re wearing that ring for the rest of your life, so the ring should fit perfectly.

When it comes to how to measure ring size, the best way or the most accurate way to get a ring that fits properly is to visit a local jeweler’s shop. However, you can use a ring size chart, a plastic ring sizer, a printable ring guide, and other methods of measuring the ring size if you prefer to do the measuring at home.

This ring size guide walks you step-by-step through everything you need to find your ring size.

Ring Size Measuring Tips

TEMPERATURE IS IMPORTANT

Finger size changes often as a result of the temperature. Fingers get bigger in warm weather and shrink in cold weather. Measure your finger in warm temperatures at the end of the day, as the finger will be at its largest during this time.

MEASURE RING SIZE MORE THAN ONCE

The ring should fit snugly on your finger. It should slide smoothly when you ease it onto your finger, but it shouldn’t come off easily. That’s what makes a ring properly sized as it minimizes the risk of loss and it won’t put too much pressure on your fingers. Checking your size more than once will help you achieve this. Don’t think that measuring ring sizes several times is too extreme. Measuring repeatedly can help you get the right fit for the first time. It will also prevent you from spending unnecessary time, money, and energy to resize the ring.

CONSIDER THE RING TYPE

Wide rings (about 6 millimeters or more) require a larger size for most people. This is because a wide band allows more space under the band for the finger than narrow rings do. Add an allowance of 0.25 to 0.5 size for rings with wider styles. For instance, if your ring size is 6 after measuring, make it 6.25 or 6.5 if you are going for the wider band. Furthermore, some rings are difficult to resize or are often impossible to size without a loss in the aesthetic. So it’s important to get the size right for those types of rings.

FINGERS ARE DIFFERENT

Generally speaking, one of your hands is slightly larger (about half a size) than the other. This hand is usually your dominant hand. To avoid any errors, it is important that you measure the left hand or whatever finger you plan to wear the ring on.

ACCOUNT FOR YOUR KNUCKLE’S SIZE

If the base of your finger is a lot smaller than your finger knuckle is and you’re using the virtual ruler, measure both the base of your finger and your knuckle, and select a size in between the two. That will help you choose a size that will allow the ring to slide over your knuckle but won’t be too large to be comfortably worn on the base of your finger.

GO FOR THE LARGER SIZE

When two sizes seem to fit or if you get two different finger measurements, it’s advisable you go for the bigger measurement or consult a professional if you can. For best measurements, take your measurements in millimeters.

How To Measure Ring Size Without Her Knowing

The beauty of a marriage proposal is best when it comes as a welcome surprise. Getting the right ring size makes a wedding proposal not only perfect but also challenging. Asking your partner directly for her ring size will definitely ruin a bit of the surprise element. Here are a few tips to get the right size.

ASK A CONFIDANT FOR HELP

This can be her best friend, her sister, or her mom. They can give you an idea of what her ring size is or help you to measure her ring size without her suspecting a thing. If you are using this method, you should only ask trustworthy people who may actually know. It is more likely that the news of your gift will reach her prematurely if you ask too many friends or those who are not good at keeping secrets.

BORROW FROM HER JEWELRY COLLECTION

Borrowing from her collection and taking the item to the jeweler may be helpful only if she doesn’t notice that one of her rings has been taken. However, if you have limited access to her jewelry, especially if she takes off her ring only once in a while, then take a quick moment to measure her ring when she removes it and won’t see you doing it. Trace around the inside of a ring on a piece of paper, or buy a bar of soap and press the ring in to make a mold. The paper or the soap can then be taken to the jeweler for the perfect ring size. Make sure to keep the ring clean after your little sleuthing escapade, of course.

COMPARE FINGERS

This method is fairly accurate, just enough to produce great results especially if you are desperate and no other option seems to work. Compare her fingers with yours while holding her hands. For example, you can compare your pinky finger with her ring finger to give you a rough estimate of her ring size.

BE CREATIVE

Sometimes, you just need to be creative to get the job done. You can measure her fingers with string, paper, or thread while she is sleeping. If she notices, you can simply say you are caressing her fingers

PLAY GAMES

You may also play games with her that may end up with a clue to her actual ring size. For example, you can play a game of personal trivia in a way that’s similar to how they do it in The Newlywed Game. All you need is to write a different random personal question on each index card. Make one of the questions about ring size. Both players write down their guesses about the other player as each card is being played. Points are given for each correct answer. At the end, you will have your ring size and a fun-filled evening, learning different things about each other.

FAKE IT

If she is not the type who wears a ring, then you will need extra effort to find out your girlfriend’s ring size. One way around this is to casually take her to a jewelry or accessory store and politely ask her to try on some rings for fun as you intend to buy a gift for your sister or your mom. Take note of the size that fits her perfectly, or you can buy the ring secretly. Make sure too that you do end up buying something cool for your mother or your sister so that your girlfriend doesn’t get suspicious.

Changing the ring size or resizing

Diamond rings are gifts that are meant to last forever, but what if the finger it’s meant for shrinks or grows? People may undergo physical changes as they age, and you may find that you need to have your ring resized. Most simple rings can easily be resized by a jeweler. For rings that have diamonds set in the band, however, a ring resizing may be impossible. This is especially true if the ring has channel-set diamonds, which can become displaced by any kind of metalwork. If a ring does become too small or large and cannot be resized, you can also have a new band created for your current diamonds.

International Ring Size Conversion Chart

Ring sizes vary from country to country. In the US, the sizes range from 0 to 20 and include quarter fractions, so for instance, you may have a ring size of 12 ¾ or 15 ½. Though you want to be as accurate as possible, people often get a size that is just a little larger, especially if the ring is going to be worn for a long time (as in the case of engagement rings or wedding rings). If you are planning to buy diamond rings online, take note that the ring sizes are generally shown in US sizes, unless the website is designed for selling diamond rings to a specific country.
